LaPortia Burks has been selected as the 2024-2025 Wayman Tisdale Fine Arts Academy Support Professional of the Year!
LaPortia has been the health assistant and Tisdale for eight years. She oversees essential medical needs, including medication administration, first aid, immunization compliance, and workers' compensation documentation.
She is also the dance coach at the school. In this role, she develops comprehensive training programs to enhance dancers' technical skills, choreography, and overall performance.
We asked LaPortia a few questions to learn more about her and her time at Tulsa Public Schools.
Why did you want to work in education?
I love teaching my students how to prevent minor injuries and helping them understand how their bodies are growing and changing, both inside and out. There’s something special about the students who feel like only "Ms. Portia" can fix their scratches or bruises, and I take pride in being their source of comfort.
My pre-K to 1st grade students remind me just how much the smallest gestures matter. The moment a band-aid is applied, it becomes more than just a cover for a scratch—it’s a symbol of care, love, and attention that makes them feel safe and valued. That simple act brings me so much joy.
With my 4th and 5th graders, I appreciate being someone they trust, especially when they need help navigating the emotions and discomfort that come with "mother nature" arriving. Supporting them through those moments makes me feel like more than just a caregiver—I’m a safe space for them.
I also cherish the relationships I build with students who take routine medications each day. Over time, I get to know them beyond just their medical needs, learning about their personalities, dreams, and challenges. And one of the things I’m most proud of? I know all 322 of my students by both their first and last names. Beyond the health aspect, my role in organizing and overseeing the dance program allows me to help students build confidence, discipline, and teamwork. I love being part of their journey, helping them develop their technical skills and performance abilities while also fostering a sense of dedication and passion.
Education is more than just academics—it’s about shaping well-rounded individuals, and I wanted to be in a position where I could contribute to that mission in multiple ways. Whether I’m working on the healthcare side or the extracurricular side, my goal is to empower students and support the school community in meaningful ways.
I won’t say this work isn’t exhausting—some days are completely overwhelming, with students pulling and tugging on me for various reasons. But at the end of the day, my work is more than just a J-O-B—it’s a calling. Being a part of my students' lives, providing care, comfort, and support, is what truly makes my role so fulfilling. And for that, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Can you tell us a bit about your time in TPS?
During my time at Tulsa Public Schools, I have learned that being a Health Assistant is about so much more than just band-aids, ice packs, and caring for students when they’re sick. This role is about education, advocacy, and support—not just for students, but for their parents and guardians as well. Every day, I have the opportunity to educate families about their children's health needs, provide guidance, and offer expertise to help them navigate medical concerns. The impact extends beyond the clinic—it’s about building trust and empowering families with the knowledge they need to care for their children.
One of the things I have enjoyed most over the past nine years is bringing the dance team to our school. It has become a source of pride and positivity for students, faculty, and parents alike. The team is more than just a performance group—it has given students a sense of belonging, boosted their academic performance, and served as a powerful outlet for self-expression and discipline. Seeing the impact it has on their confidence, teamwork, and overall school experience has been incredibly fulfilling.
Looking back, my time at Tulsa Public Schools has been a journey of growth, resilience, and impact. Through it all, I remain committed to caring for my students, supporting their families, and making a difference in both health and education.
What are you passionate about outside of work?
Outside of my work at Tulsa Public Schools, I am deeply passionate about entrepreneurship. I am the co-owner of The Creative Suites, a Black-owned, woman-owned co-working space and event center located just six minutes from Black Wall Street in Downtown Tulsa.
In 2019, I was featured in The Black Wall Street Times for my contributions to the business community. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to host free business events to support local entrepreneurs and foster community growth. My dedication to economic empowerment has also led me to receive various business grants, including funding from We Tulsa, as well as being among the first recipients of the 1921 Business Grant in Tulsa.
Entrepreneurship allows me to combine my passion for community building, economic empowerment, and creating spaces for growth and collaboration. It’s more than just a business—it’s a mission to uplift and support others on their own journeys to success.
Is there anything else you would like everyone to know?
One thing I want people to know about Wayman Tisdale Fine Arts Academy is that we have some of the best staff and teachers in the district. Our office staff is incredible, and we truly operate like a work family—always supporting each other both inside and outside of school.
Our principal is absolutely amazing. She is deeply invested in the success of not only our students but also our staff, teachers, and parents. She is present, involved, and engaged in the daily life of our school, making sure she knows what’s happening in every part of the building. Even with deadlines and responsibilities, she always makes time for her staff and students, ensuring that everyone feels heard, valued, and supported.
